Pottery

Pottery or ceramics are one of the most useful things found at an archeological site. People change what kind of pottery they use fairly regularly making it a good indicator of when it was used. Pottery also breaks easily, which means we find a lot of it at archeological sites.

An ironstone plate. A pottery marker's mark A detail from an annular ware piece of pottery.
Ironstone is a common ceramic found in the second half of the ninteenth century. It was made in many different forms. Potteries put a mark on the bottom of the pieces they make, and that mark can be used to learn a lot about the pottery. Many other kinds of pottery were found in the excavations. This annular ware lid is just one of them.
